Year 6 Project

It could be argued that it is both a good thing and a bad thing that food banks are being used more in the current times.

It could be a good thing that people are using food banks because it means awareness is getting greater. A lot of people are travelling and walking further to get food from the food banks and more agencies are referring people which is a good thing.

It could though be a bad thing that people are using food banks more than before. It could mean there is not enough food to feed the homeless who have suffered maybe losing their jobs and hence have no money. About 14 million people including 4.5 million children are living in poverty in this country at present. Another reason people might not have food is that they are refugees from another country or they have come from a broken family situation. These people also use food banks.

Overall, I think it is a good thing that the awareness of foodbanks is getting larger because less people will be starving and that is better for all of us.

In Birch class, children were tasked with exploring the increased use of foodbanks across the UK, examining the reasons why people need them and developing their own opinions around the subject. Here Freya T in Birch Class explains her thoughts:

I think foodbanks are something to feel extremely proud of. Just the thought of people going hungry, their kids begging for foods sends shivers down my spine. In a community, a town or even a country, everyone should have the right to food. Many people believe that food banks are a disgrace to our country but I couldn’t disagree more. These are poor people in crisis and no-one should have to go hungry. I also feel like the government should do more to help. 1 in 5 people who use food banks are under the poverty line and are in danger of losing their homes. I feel the government should be giving more money to people in need.
